How I Care for My Hair Extensions on Vacation: My Go-To Tips for Gorgeous Beach Hair

Hey beauties! If you’re reading this, you’re probably gearing up for your next vacation (or dreaming about one)! One of the questions I get all the time from my clients and followers is how to take care of your hair—especially your hair extensions—while you’re out having fun in the sun.
Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or just taking that much-needed beach break, I want to share my tried-and-true tips to help you rock beautiful, healthy hair and enjoy every minute of your trip (without obsessing about your extensions).
First Things First: Don’t Overthink It!
Look, I get it. You invest a lot in your hair, and you want it to look flawless, even when you’re on vacation. But honestly? I see so many women stressing over their extensions and missing out on the fun. I promise, you can dive into the pool, jump on the jet ski, or lounge in the sun and keep your hair looking amazing. You just need the right tools and a little strategy.

My Non-Negotiables: What’s in My Beach Bag?
Here’s my quick checklist:
Leave-in conditioner: This is a must. I always toss a travel-size bottle in my beach bag.
My Isla brush: Seriously, I do not leave home without it.
Before I jump in the ocean or pool, I don’t load my hair up with a ton of product—I want to have fun and not worry about sticky, weighed-down hair. But as soon as I’m out of the water, I spritz in leave-in conditioner and brush through my hair gently. This helps avoid tangles and matting, especially if you’re swimming in salt water or sitting in the sun.
The Sunscreen Secret
Blondes, listen up: sunscreen and hair extensions are NOT friends. Avoid getting sunscreen in your hair at all costs, especially the chemical kind—it can discolor light extensions and leave your hair looking brassy. I apply my sunscreen before I style my hair and am careful not to get any on my wefts.
Easy, Effortless Vacation Styles
One thing I want you to remember: vacation hair doesn’t have to be high-maintenance.
Here are a few of my favorite go-to vacation styles:
Low Sleek Bun: Wash your hair (or just your bangs!), blow out the front, and put everything in a chic low bun. Perfect for dinner after a day at the beach!
Braids at Night: Braid your hair before bed, and wake up to effortless, beautiful beach waves.
Half-up Styles: Great for when you want to keep hair out of your face but still show off those extensions.

Can I Swim with Hair Extensions?
Yes, yes, and yes! I get in the water all the time—no complicated braids, no fancy prep, just living my best life. As long as you bring your brush and conditioner, you’ll be fine. Just make sure to brush gently after swimming and keep your hair detangled. And, of course, don’t forget your hat for extra protection if you’re lounging in the sun!
How Often Should I Wash My Extensions on Vacation?
At home, I usually recommend washing your hair once or twice a week. But let’s be real, on vacation (especially if you’re in the water a lot), you may find yourself washing more often. Just keep in mind: the more you wash and expose your extensions to salt, chlorine, and sun, the more wear and tear. It’s totally normal for your extensions to need replacing a bit more frequently if you’re a vacation queen—and in my opinion, it’s so worth it to enjoy every moment!

My Last Word: Don’t Stress, Just Enjoy
Hair is meant to be fun! Don’t let fear of ruining your extensions keep you from enjoying your vacation. Bring the right tools, use the right products, and have an amazing time. Your memories are way more important than a perfect hair day.
